Prevention of Child Abuse

The 81st legislative session passed HB 1041 relating to school district policies addressing sexual abuse of children and the establishment of a state strategy to reduce child abuse and neglect and improve child welfare. The implementation of this law will be instrumental in the development of best practices for student and school safety. The safety of our students is of the utmost importance to TEA and every school district in the state of Texas. Any campus can be the target of violence and the distribution of information will enable districts to utilize a benchmark to measure their efforts to keep their schools safe and secure.

Research has demonstrated that five important factors can help protect children from the risk of child abuse and neglect.

  1. Nurturing and attachment
  2. Knowledge of parenting and of child and youth development
  3. Parental resilience
  4. Social connections
  5. Concrete support for parents

It is with this focus we hope school districts will utilize this information for staff development as well as parental support in creating and promoting healthy families. Further information can be found at USDHHS.
