Midland ISD hires second College Connections Advisor

Move is part of initiative to help students transition to higher education

November 29, 2023 — Midland ISD has expanded its commitment to preparing students for college by hiring a second College Connections Advisor. This will enable each of MISD's comprehensive high schools to employ a full-time advisor to assist students as they prepare for and pursue college and college credits. Previously, only one College Connections Advisor had served students at both Midland and Legacy high schools.

The primary focus of the advisors is to guide students as they prepare for college, even those who may be planning to enter the work force immediately upon graduation. One of the key objectives of the program is to ensure that all students are informed and equipped to take advantage of the many dual-credit opportunities available to them through a partnership between MISD and Midland College that allows students to earn credits and professional certificates while still in high school.

"We're excited to be able to enhance our support for students aspiring to get started on their college education," said Legacy High School College Connections Advisor Becky Gonzalez. "There is so much opportunity for students to get started in college, and some just need a little guidance in getting started."

Additionally, these advisors will help students navigate college applications, financial aid applications (including FAFSA), and other essential documents that will aid them as they enter college or career following graduation.

The addition of these specialized positions is part of an initiative to foster an environment where every student has the resources and support necessary to be successful.
