December 13, 2021 — Midland ISD's online application portal,
Apply Midland, is currently accepting applications for the 2022-23 school year. Families can apply for any of MISD's School of Choice. They can also apply for gifted and talented (G/T) services, which includes elementary G/T services at Carver Center.
Current first through 11th grade students are eligible to apply for G/T services. Current MISD kindergarteners received screening for G/T this fall.
The deadline to apply for G/T services and Carver Center is January 14, while the deadline to apply for the other Schools of Choice is January 28. The early deadline is because of the robust testing process that takes place for students wishing to enter the G/T programs. The process involves multiple-choice testing for advanced reasoning and achievement. Secondary G/T candidates are also evaluated based on their GPA.
"Our G/T services are for students who perform at remarkably high levels of accomplishment," said Judy Bridges, Director of Advanced Academic Services.
All MISD kindergarten students are screened to determine if they should be nominated for G/T. Nominations occur in October. Identified students are then enrolled in the QUEST program, which prepares them for enrollment in Carver Center. Students who were not identified as G/T in kindergarten are still eligible to apply for G/T services at this time, and proceed through testing.
Students identified as G/T in grades 1-6 attend Carver Center. This elementary school caters specifically to these gifted students, placing them in an environment where they are challenged to reach their academic potential.
"We strive to create the best learning environment for GT students through enriched, personalized learning experiences that develop and encourage quality, creativity and perseverance," said Carver Center Executive Administrator Stephanie Carnett. "Our goal is for students to be equipped with the necessary skills to continue high achievement throughout their academic careers."
Students in grades 7-12 who are identified as G/T are also held to high academic standards. These students are served in G/T sections at their campus in AP and other enhanced academic classes within the four primary subjects of English, math, science and social studies.
"MISD's goal is to meet all students where they are, and help them to grow," Bridges said. "We do this for G/T students by providing greater depth and complexity to their curriculum and instruction, often while moving at a faster pace."
