October 14, 2021 — Speech and Debate teams across Midland ISD are achieving unprecedented success this year. The teams plan to showcase their skills at the Tall City Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament October 22 and 23 at Legacy High School.
More than 250 students from 21 schools will participate in the event, now in it's 44th year. Schools from as far away as Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston will be participating in the two-day tournament.
This year's event is especially exciting for teams from Midland as each have a unique story to share:
- Legacy High's team looks to continue its winning tradition. The Rebels are currently ranked No. 35 in the country, and No. 3 in Texas by the National Speech & Debate Association.
- Students from Midland High's team will also be competing after a multi-year hiatus. Speech and Debate have been offered at MHS, but students had not participated in competitions in recent years.
- For the first time, the Young Women's Leadership Academy of Midland (YWLA) is fielding a Speech and Debate Team, and will compete in UIL-sanctioned events at the 3A level!
"The growth of the program the last few years has been amazing," said LHS Debate Coach Joshua Wimberley. "Speech and Debate really helps these students build valuable skills and confidence that will serve them their entire lives."
The media is invited to cover the competition Friday and Saturday, October 22 and 23. Friday's event runs 11:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Friday, and 7:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. on Saturday.
