MISD Names Deputy, Associate Superintendents

July 1, 2021 — Midland ISD is pleased to announce the hire of three dynamic academic leaders who will join the district for the 2021-22 school year.

Dr. Kregg Cuellar has been tapped as the Deputy Superintendent of Learning, Leading and Innovation. This role, which replaces the Chief Academic Officer position, leads a team of District Service Center staff who provide support and leadership to campuses. Cuellar is a Texas native with more than 20 years of experience in a variety of educational roles. He most recently served as Deputy Superintendent of Instruction and School Communities for Portland Public Schools.

"I am thrilled to be joining Midland ISD at such an exciting and pivotal time," shared Cuellar. "I look forward to spending time on campuses meeting our students, teachers, and parents."

Mr. Charles Garcia has been named as one of two Associate Superintendents working under Cuellar, who will provide leadership to a team of campuses. Mr. Garcia comes to Midland from El Paso with 20 years experience as a teacher, counselor, assistant principal and principal. He most recently served as the principal of Bel Air High School in Ysleta ISD, where he turned around the campus from one of the lowest performing schools to one of the highest performing in the state, El Paso region, and district.

"We want to plug in and invest in our campus leadership so they can invest in our students," Garcia said. "We want our principals and students to be proud of their school and excited for the start of the new school year."

Dr. Luz Martinez, joining MISD as an Associate Superintendent, brings 25 years of experience as a teacher, assistant principal, principal and executive coach/trainer in multiple roles across Texas and the nation.

"The opportunity to make an impact for so many children in this district is exciting," shared Martinez.

"Dr. Cuellar, Dr. Martinez and Mr. Garcia come to MISD with exceptional track-records of student success, strong academic leadership, and a heart for children," said Superintendent Angélica Ramsey. "I am thrilled to welcome them to Midland."

July 1 marks the start of Midland ISD's 2021-2022 Academic and Fiscal Year. School starts August 2.
