April 29, 2021 — Lamar Elementary has been recognized by the Flippen Group as a National Showcase School for the second straight year because of its success under the organization's Capturing Kids' Hearts (CKH) program.
Principal Amy Clark discovered the program about 15 years ago when she was a principal in Bryan. She saw its success firsthand when she implemented CKH into her school there. She did the same at Lamar four years ago and made it Lamar's signature program because it focuses on building relationships with students so they believe in themselves.
One prominent feature of the CKH experience is the social contract. Each classroom creates a social contract, and students hold each other accountable and encourage classmates through affirmations. They hold visitors accountable, as well. "Each classroom selects an ambassador who invites any classroom visitors to join them in following the social contract," Clark said. "Visitors sign the contract, which is on the wall for all to see, and they learn about what the class values, such as being kind and doing your best."
As a National Showcase School, Lamar is considered an example for how CKH can improve student success. Only 325 schools nationwide were chosen this year.
Last year, Lamar and Flippen launched the Lamar Excel Leadership Academy — an in-house leadership development program for students. The academy focuses each month on a single important leadership attribute such as empathy, integrity, organization and teamwork.
