April 22, 2021 — Midland High Theatre will perform a send-off show next week in preparation for the state University Interscholastic League one-act play competition.
MHS advanced to the state contest this year for the first time since 1982. MHS Theatre will perform scenes from PigPen Theatre Co.'s "The Old Man and the Old Moon," a theatrical and song-filled tale about an old man who gives up his job filling the moon with light to search for his lifelong love.
This year also marks the first time since 1982 that two West Texas schools advanced to the state contest. Back then, MHS and El Paso High School were selected to compete. Thirty-nine years later, MHS and Frenship High School will represent Region 1-6A. This will be the ninth time MHS has qualified for state; the first was in 1944, when students performed "The Eve of St. Mark" Act II by Maxwell Anderson. The school has never won state but has finished second four times (1947, 1960, 1961 and 1976).
The send-off performance is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, at the MHS auditorium, 906 W. Illinois Ave. This event is free and open to the public. Face masks are required.
The state competition is set for Friday, April 30, at Waxahachie High School in Waxahachie. Tickets are available for purchase on the
UIL website. Email MHS Theatre Director Tiffany Gardner-Moore (
