September 4, 2020 — The Citizens' Renaming Committee at its meeting Sept. 3 voted for its top five recommendations for the renaming of Robert E. Lee Senior High School and Robert E. Lee Freshman High School.
The committee, which convened at the Lee High School library Thursday evening, was tasked with choosing five names this week. These five names will be reduced to three at their next meeting. The committee will bring from one to three recommendations to the Midland ISD Board of Trustees, which ultimately will decide on a new name.
On Monday, each committee member had the option to recommend one name. Then, each committee member had the option to choose up to five names among the recommendations, and the results were tallied. The top five recommendations were:
- Midland Carver Lee High School (15 votes).
- Tall City High School (12 votes).
- Basin High School (11 votes).
- Lee High School (11 votes).
- Legacy of Equality and Excellence High School (10 votes).
The committee is composed of 23 individuals, including two representatives from each School Board district, two students, a principal, two teachers, and two at-large members. The committee is chaired by Blake Feldt, Executive Director of Athletics, and Shannon Low, a current Lee parent.
