EIC(LOCAL)- Calculating Class Rank

March 2019

Midland ISD is seeking your input regarding recommended changes to policy regarding calculating Grade Point Average (GPA).  These recommended changes would NOT impact current students grades nine through twelve.  If approved, changes would go into effect for those entering grade 9 during the 2019-2020 school year and beyond.

A team chaired by Advanced Academics Director Judy Bridges worked from September to January to come to recommend a policy that best fit the needs of our students and the expectations of our community. This task force was thirty-five members strong with representation from college representatives, counselors, teachers, directors and parents. The task force dissected the pros and cons of our current policy and reviewed the pros and cons of at least twenty policies from both our comparison schools and the most competitive schools relative to college and career performance.

On February 7, 2019, the Board Policy Committee approved taking the first reading of this recommended policy to the full Board of Trustees on February 19, 2019.  At the board meeting on the 19th of February, trustees heard the recommended changes during an academic update.  The primary changes include:

  1. Remove provisions for students who entered grade 9 before 2012-2013.
  2. Add dual credit to the weighted category.
  3. Include all State Courses in calculating rank.

We are asking for feedback from the community and parents regarding these recommendations.  Feedback will be collected and considered before submitting a final draft to the Midland ISD Board of Trustees at the March board meeting.

Again, these recommended changes would NOT impact current students grades nine through twelve.  If approved, changes would go into effect for those entering grade 9 during the 2019-2020 school year and beyond.  For your convenience, please review the side-by-side comparison of the original to the recommended EIC(LOCAL) policy and leave feedback using the form below.
