NEWS RELEASE: MISD Adopts New Math Curriculum for Grades 6-8

Midland ISD Adopts STEMscopes Math Curriculum in Grades 6-8 and Algebra I

New math curriculum adopted to strengthen student achievement

May 21, 2025 – Midland ISD is proud to announce the adoption of the STEMscopes Math curriculum for 6th through 8th grade and Algebra I, beginning in the 2025-26 school year. This initiative reflects the district's ongoing commitment to improving academic outcomes and equipping students with the critical thinking and problem-solving skills they need to be college, career, or military ready.

STEMscopes Math is a comprehensive, research-based curriculum aligned with state and national standards. It utilizes a blended learning model—combining digital and print resources—to deliver engaging, real-world math instruction. Cross-curricular connections link math to other subjects, helping students see its real-world relevance.

"This curriculum gives educators the tools to engage all students in deeper mathematical thinking and ensures high-quality and consistent math instruction," said Damian Gaytan, Secondary Math Coordinator. "Our goal is to close learning gaps and increase achievement for every student."

With this adoption, MISD aims to provide consistent, grade-level aligned instruction that supports all students in performing on grade level. Teachers will receive professional development and support to ensure a smooth and successful implementation.

As part of the district's broader focus on advanced academics, MISD is aligning math pathways with Texas Texas Senate Bill 2124 (SB 2124). This legislation requires districts to develop an Advanced Mathematics program to increase the number of students completing Algebra I by the 8th grade. MISD will work closely with leaders in the Advanced Academics and Counseling Departments to define clear entry and exit criteria for the Advanced Math track.

In the new instructional model:

  • On-level 7th grade students will receive 90 minutes of math instruction weekly, including small group support and support for Emergent Bilingual students.
  • Honors/advanced students will receive 45 minutes of instruction.
  • All students will complete common unit checks at 9, 18, and 27 weeks to help track progress and guide instruction.

"A significant advantage of STEMscopes Math is the integration of formative and summative assessments, which allow us to track progress in real time and tailor instruction to meet student needs," said Chief Academic Officer, Erin Bueno. "Our implementation plan will ensure fidelity, consistency, and measure progress across all campuses."

The adoption of STEMscopes Math is a major step forward in preparing students for success in high school and beyond.
