Midland ISD Honors Three National Merit Commended Students

Three students earn national recognition for academic achievement

September 30, 2026 — Midland ISD is proud to announce three students from the district have been named National Merit Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

These students represent Midland High School and Early College High School.

  • Evan Gonzalez, Midland High School
  • Calleigh Atchison, Early College High School
  • Samuel Eberly, Early College High School

The three Commended Students join Shwetha Jayakumar, the National Merit Semifinalist from Young Women’s Leadership Academy who was announced earlier this month, bringing the total number of Midland ISD students recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation this year to four.

To achieve Commended status, students must score among the top 50,000 of more than 1.5 million juniors nationwide who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Fewer than 3% of all test-takers earn this recognition, making it a significant academic accomplishment.

“We are incredibly proud of these students and all they have accomplished. Earning Commended Student recognition is the result of years of hard work, curiosity, and a commitment to learning,” said Kathleen Cook, Director of Teaching and Learning. “This recognition celebrates not only what they have achieved academically but also the potential they carry with them into the future. We are excited to see where their talents and determination take them next.”

The three students add to Midland ISD’s continued representation among students recognized through the National Merit Scholarship Program, reflecting the district’s continued commitment to providing students with opportunities to pursue academic excellence and college readiness.

Midland ISD will recognize these students at the November 5 District Recognition Event at Bowie Fine Arts Academy at 6:30 p.m.
