More students took and passed college-level exam

July 11, 2024 — Newly released results from the 2024 Advanced Placement (AP) exam show success for MISD students. This year, an increased number of MISD students took AP exams, and the passage rate of those achieving a score of at least 3 (out of 5) exceeded previously set goals.

By the Numbers

2,095 MISD students from Midland High, Legacy High, Midland Freshman, Legacy Freshman, Early College HS, and Young Women's Leadership Academy took a total of 3,619 AP exams across 28 courses. That represents an increase of 17% of participating students and 27% of total exams taken from 2023. Of those exams taken, 36% earned scores of 3, 4, or 5, surpassing the district's goal of 35% and marking an improvement from last year's 29% (see chart).

"The dedication and hard work of our students and educators have truly paid off," said MISD Associate Superintendent Ashley Osborne. "These results reflect our commitment to academic excellence and providing the best educational opportunities for our students."

School Highlights

Legacy High School:

The percentage of LHS students earning a score of 3 or higher jumped from 51% to 56%. The total number of students earning 3's was 337, more than double the number of students achieving that level of success in 2020 or 2021.

Midland High School:

MHS students earning the score of 3 or higher jumped 14 percentage points, to 37%. This is double the number of achieving students since 2021, with a total of 318 students earning a 3 or higher.

Teacher Incentives

For the 2023-24 school year, MISD teachers of students who earn a 4 or higher on AP exams earned an incentive made possible by the Midland Education Foundation. Forty-eight teachers earned incentives totaling $82,100.

Looking Ahead

The district's strategic plan aims to increase the percentage of students scoring 3 or higher on AP exams to 50% by 2028.
