Midland ISD Welcomes Over 3,000 Employees at Annual Convocation

District celebrates success and narrows the focus for continued improvement

August 5, 2025 – Midland ISD kicked off the 2025–26 school year by welcoming more than 3,000 employees to its annual Convocation event. Held at the Midland County Horseshoe Pavilion, the event brought together teachers, staff, and administrators to celebrate recent progress and energize employees for the work ahead.

The program opened with a performance of the National Anthem by Brian Gravelle, Assistant Choir Director at Legacy High School, setting a tone of pride and unity across the venue. Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Howard delivered a message that reflected on the district’s achievements while laying out the path forward. “We are proud of how far we have come, and we are even more excited about where we are going,” she told the crowd.



The event spotlighted strong academic progress throughout Midland ISD. Early literacy initiatives are gaining momentum, with the number of Pre-K seats offered exceeding 1,500. Advanced Academics programs are thriving, with a growing number of National Merit Scholars and Finalists, and a significant increase in the number of students earning qualifying scores on AP exams. Improvements were also evident in fine arts, athletics, and career and technical education. More students are earning certifications that prepare them for future careers, while also competing—and succeeding—at the state and national levels in athletics, robotics, and the arts.

“Our students are showing us what’s possible when expectations are high and support is strong,” said Araelia Betler, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning. “The curriculum work we have done over the past two years, paired with instructional coaching and high quality instructional materials, is creating consistency across classrooms and elevating student performance.”

The district also highlighted significant investment in leadership development. Dozens of educators were recognized for their participation in programs like the Aspiring Principal Academy, Apprenticeship Program, and Principal Fellows initiative. These efforts are growing a pipeline of homegrown campus leaders and ensuring continued instructional excellence across schools.

This year’s Convocation also included a panel discussion featuring Chris Cole, a grandparent of a MISD student, Executive Director of Teaching & Learning Araelia Betler, and community partner Todd Rogers. The panelists discussed the value of collaboration between schools, families, and the broader community. They shared reflections on the past year and emphasized the role of shared responsibility in student success, promoting Excellence in Action.

“Convocation is a time for reflection, celebration, and renewed commitment,” said Andrea Messick, Chief Communications Officer. “When we bring our entire MISD family together under one roof, it’s a powerful reminder of the impact we can have when we are united in purpose.”

The event also celebrated increased engagement from families and community partners. With more than 6,500 PTA members and over $2.2 million raised through donations, the district’s commitment to connection and engaging the Midland community remains strong.

As Midland ISD enters the new school year on the heels of improved student outcomes, growing academic opportunities, and historic investment through Bond 2023, the message of Convocation 2025 was clear: the district is focused, energized, and ready to build on its momentum.
