July 20, 2026 — Eight Midland ISD students recently participated in the Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) STEM+M Doc-Prep Program, a prestigious week-long summer experience that provides high-achieving students with firsthand exposure to careers in medicine and the health sciences.
Through MISD's STEM+M partnership with Baylor College of Medicine, Midland ISD students were selected from a competitive applicant pool to attend the immersive program in Houston.
Throughout the week, students participated in hands-on learning experiences, explored clinical and research environments, interacted with the Baylor College of Medicine faculty and medical students, and gained valuable insight into the educational pathways and professional responsibilities associated with careers in healthcare.
To be considered for the program, students were required to complete their junior year of high school, demonstrate a strong interest in medicine or health sciences, rank in the top 25 percent of their graduating class, and remain in good standing at either Midland Lee High School or Midland High School.
“This professional learning experience provided valuable insights that will be incorporated into Midland ISD's STEM+M high school launch, further strengthening opportunities for future students,” said Jeff Horner, Midland ISD Executive Director of CTE.
MISD staff members accompanied students throughout the experience while the district’s Career & Technical Education Department coordinated transportation, lodging, and meals. Staff also participated alongside students in portions of the program, gaining valuable insight into innovative instructional practices, emerging healthcare technologies, and Baylor College of Medicine’s approach to medical education.
As graduates of the BCM Doc-Prep Program, the participating students will serve as STEM+M Ambassadors during the upcoming school year. In this role, they will share their experiences with younger students, participate in recruitment and outreach events, and inspire the next generation of physicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals.
