Academic Gains Noted in MISD; Improvement Efforts Ongoing

June 16, 2026 — The Texas Education Agency released the spring 2026 State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) 3-8 results. These results are a key indicator of student performance in the areas of math, reading language arts, science, and social studies. 



Student performance on STAAR assessments is reported across four achievement levels: Did Not Meet Grade Level, Approaches Grade Level, Meets Grade Level, and Masters Grade Level. While scoring at the Approaches Grade Level constitutes a passing score, Midland ISD remains focused on increasing the percentage of students performing at the Meets and Masters levels, which indicate stronger readiness for postsecondary success.



Preliminary results show that Midland ISD's performance at the Meets level improved or maintained in all 13 tested areas compared to spring 2025.
  • 3-8 RLA outperformed the region at meets and masters 
  • 3-7 Math outperformed the region at meets and masters
  • 6th Math outperformed the state at meets and masters
  • 8th Math outperformed the region at masters
  • 8th Social Studies outperformed the region at meets and masters

 

The recent implementation of the updated science curriculum standards, known as the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), resulted in updated content on the 5th and 8th grade science assessments. To ensure the updated content on the science assessments does not increase or decrease the difficulty level of the tests, standard-setting processes are being conducted, and TEA will release science results on July 31, 2026. 



“We are seeing encouraging results from our continued focus on utilizing consistent, aligned instructional practices in reading language arts and mathematics across the district,” said MISD Superintendent Dr. Stephanie Howard. “While we are pleased with the gains our students have made in both reading language arts and math, we know there is still important work ahead. Our commitment is to continue raising achievement levels and reaching or surpassing state performance averages. I am grateful to our students, teachers, and campus leaders for their dedication throughout the year and am excited to build on this momentum in the year to come.” 

 

To strengthen student achievement, Midland ISD has established a unified system of instructional support through the collaborative work of Campus Leadership, Teaching & Learning, Principal Supervisors, and Teach Like a Champion. Rather than focusing solely on instructional materials, the district has implemented consistent instructional practices, coaching structures, and accountability systems across campuses to ensure high-quality teaching and learning. This coordinated approach creates a coherent educational experience for students while providing educators with aligned expectations, ongoing coaching, and targeted support. Although systematic instructional improvements take multiple years to fully impact student outcomes, we are encouraged by the gains we are seeing and remain committed to continuously refining our practices to accelerate achievement for every student. 

 

“These gains are the result of intentional leadership, exceptional teaching, and the unwavering commitment of our campus teams to ensuring every student succeeds,” said Erin Bueno, Deputy Superintendent. “We are proud of the progress and even more excited about the work ahead.” 

 

A year ago, Midland ISD committed to developing principals as instructional leaders by strategically aligning professional development, coaching, intentional data practices, and instructional support. The gains we are seeing today are a reflection of that collective effort and the dedication of our teachers and leaders. Building on this momentum, Midland ISD will extend this work to all assistant principals, further strengthening instructional leadership and ensuring consistent, high-quality practices across every campus. 

 

Team Midland ISD has already begun breaking down the data to identify areas of success and opportunities for growth. This analysis is driving our planning as we refine instructional practices and provide targeted support to campuses. Throughout the summer, we are hosting multiple professional development opportunities for teachers and campus leadership to strengthen instruction, build leadership capacity, and ensure we are prepared to accelerate student learning in the coming school year. Midland ISD remains committed to continuous improvement and preparing every student for success.
