Midland ISD Hosts Topping-Out Ceremony for Midland Lee High School

District celebrates Bond 2023 milestone

June 24, 2026 — Midland Independent School District celebrated a major milestone in the construction of the new Midland Lee High School on Wednesday, June 24 with a topping-out ceremony celebrating the placement of the final structural steel beam.

Held at the Midland Lee High School construction site, the ceremony brought together board members, district and campus leadership, staff, students, community members, and project partners to celebrate continued progress on one of the district’s most significant bond projects.

This milestone comes 365 days after breaking ground on the site and reflects continued progress on the new comprehensive high school campus, which is designed to serve students in grades 9–12 and support Midland’s future growth. Once complete, the campus will accommodate a core capacity of 4,200 students. 

The new Midland Lee High School will expand classroom spaces and fine arts and athletic facilities to provide students with modern learning environments designed to support academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and college and career readiness.

“This building is more than steel and concrete. It is an investment in our students, our teachers, and the future of Midland,” said Dr. Stephanie Howard, Midland ISD Superintendent. “Years from now, thousands of students will walk these halls, make lifelong memories, prepare for careers, and build the skills they need to be successful.”

In November 2023, Midland voters approved the district’s historic $1.4B bond, making transformational projects like the new Midland Lee High School possible. The project remains ahead of schedule and continues to reflect Midland ISD’s commitment to responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.

Michael Booker, Midland ISD School Board Vice President, said, "The project represents more than a new building. This beam represents opportunities for students, inspiring moments in classrooms, athletes competing under the lights, musicians and artists sharing their talents, and young people discovering who they are and who they can become."

The ceremonial beam signed during the event will become a permanent part of the structure, symbolizing the collective investment of the Midland community in future generations of Rebels.

Construction continues across the site, and the new Midland Lee High School will open in August 2028.
