Midland ISD Hosts Junior High & Elementary FLL Scrimmages

Highlighting Student Innovation, Teamwork, and Growing Robotics Programs

December 9, 2025 — Midland ISD recently hosted Junior High and Elementary FIRST LEGO League (FLL) scrimmages, welcoming more than 70 teams from 35 schools across the district and surrounding communities. The events offered students valuable hands-on experience in robotics, giving teams the opportunity to test their robots, refine strategies, and prepare for upcoming qualifying competitions.

Junior High Division Highlights

Junior high teams delivered impressive performances, with many earning high-scoring runs across three matches. Abell and Goddard junior highs led MISD campuses with several of the top overall scores.

  • Digging Ducks (Abell) – 270
  • The Aztechs (Goddard) – 250
  • Paleorangers (Abell) – 240
  • Crazy Coders (Abell) – 210

  • Mustang Robotics 1 (San Jacinto) – 190
  • Gear (YWLA) – 160
  • St. Ann’s Teams – 110
  • Artifacts (Alamo) – 105

 

These teams demonstrated strong engineering skills, consistency, and readiness for the competitive season ahead.

 

Elementary Division Highlights

Elementary teams showcased a mix of returning programs and first-time competitors. Fannin Elementary and Bowie Fine Arts Academy set the pace, followed closely by De Zavala STEM and Jones Techblazers.

Additional teams gaining valuable competition experience included Lone Star Trails, Rusk, and Emerson elementaries.

Overall Observations

  • Participation remains strong, with robust representation from both elementary and junior high campuses.
  • Abell  Junior High and Greathouse  Elementary fielded multiple competitive teams.
  • Teams showed notable improvement across their rounds, underscoring the importance of scrimmages in preparing for official competitions.

 

Upcoming Qualifiers

  • Midland Qualifier ONE: January 24 – Greathouse Elementary
  • Midland Qualifier TWO: January 31 – Abell Junior High

 

Teams are encouraged to continue refining their Innovative Projects and Engineering Notebooks in preparation for these events.
