Jones Elementary named the 2024 Elementary Campus of the Year for Closing the Gap with Emergent Bilinguals

Finalists selected from 750 districts, and over 4,000 schools

November 18, 2024 —Midland ISD is proud to recognize Jones Elementary for earning the title of Summit K12 Elementary Campus of the Year. Selected from over 4,000 Texas campuses utilizing Summit K12's platforms, this recognition highlights Jones Elementary's outstanding performance in the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS), high levels of platform engagement, and innovative strategies to support Emergent Bilingual students.

Summit K12, a recognized leader in online, standards-based supplemental curriculum, recently announced the winners and finalists of the 2024 Summies Awards. These prestigious awards honor exceptional educational achievements, with a special focus on supporting emergent bilingual students across Texas.

Jones Elementary is one of 39 campuses in Midland ISD, proudly serving just under 500 students. Of these students, 77% are economically disadvantaged, 52% are considered at risk, and 112 are classified as emergent bilingual. Jones Elementary takes pride in its unique and inclusive community, serving as a bilingual campus for Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade students.

“It is a great honor for Jones Elementary to be recognized for the Summies,” Ms. Tanya Duewall, Principal of Jones Elementary, said. “It is fantastic for my bilingual students and staff to receive this honor.”

The awards were presented last month during the 52nd Annual Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE) Conference. This year’s program continues Summit K12's tradition of recognizing educational excellence, introduced with their inaugural awards in 2022. The awards now categorize districts based on their emergent bilingual student populations rather than total enrollment, ensuring a more equitable comparison among districts with similar demographics.

“I am extremely proud of Ms. Duewall and her campus team for earning this recognition,” said Jessica Redman, Principal Supervisor. “Their dedication last year to improving student achievement and growth through the utilization of the Summit K12 is truly commendable, and it is wonderful to see their hard work acknowledged in this way!”
