Early College High School provides 60 debt-free college credits to students of all academic backgrounds

March 30, 2026 — Midland Independent school district’s Early College High School, located on the Midland College campus, is redefining the traditional high school experience by providing students a clear, supported pathway to earn both a high school diploma and an Associate Degree — completely free of charge.

Through a unique partnership with Midland College, Early College High School allows students to earn up to 60 college credit hours during their four years of high school. The program specifically targets at-risk and economically disadvantaged students, including those who may be the first in their family to attend college, proving that a rigorous collegiate path is accessible to all motivated students.

Unlike traditional high school settings, Early College High School students are immersed in a collegiate environment from day one. Principal Renee Hidalgo emphasizes that the program is designed for students who are willing to work hard, regardless of whether or not they have a history of "perfect" grades.

"ECHS is unique in our commitment to supporting students both academically and personally," shared Principal Hidalgo. "Our partnership ensures that advisors, counselors, and faculty from both the high school and college levels work together to provide the guidance and tutoring necessary for students to thrive while balancing complex coursework."

The impact of the program is best seen through its alumni. Lacy Morrow Dean, a 2016 Early College High School graduate, returned to her alma mater as the English Department Head and an adjunct professor at Midland College.

"Early College High School is the reason I am who I am today," said Mrs. Dean. "Because our students are on a college campus, they have constant inspiration and examples of expectations. We work diligently to help students find the best versions of themselves, regardless of where they start."

For current students, the program represents a head start on ambitious career goals. Sophomore Maria Fernandez Castillo, who serves as Class President and Student Ambassador, chose Early College High School to accelerate her eight-year journey toward becoming a veterinarian.

"I am aware of the great privilege it is to earn an associate degree at only 18 years old," said Castillo. "This program has been a blessing to my future. It takes perseverance, but for me, it is worth it to get a head start on the career of my dreams." Castillo shared that the program’s rigor can be challenging and encourages students to reflect on their goals and readiness before applying, noting that the program requires commitment but offers valuable opportunities.

Beyond the classroom, students learn how to be successful in college, career, and their personal lives through social connections with students in different grade levels-using those connections as mentorship opportunities through clubs like Senior Girls. They also make community connections through community service hours. Students participate in mock interviews in PATH classes and develop self advocacy in their college courses by visiting professors during office hours.

Early College High School at Midland College is a nationally recognized school that utilizes a lottery system to match the demographics of the Midland Independent School District. By removing the financial barriers of the first two years of college, Early College High School serves as a catalyst for students' dreams, fostering an environment where hard work and support lead to incredible achievements.
