    The mission of Communities In Schools (CIS) of Texas is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.
     
    What is Communities In Schools?
    CIS is the nation's leading organization that champions the connection of needed community resources with schools to help young people successfully learn, stay in school, and prepare for life.
    Administered by the Texas Education Agency, CIS of Texas is an exemplary stay in school program funded by the Texas Legislature since 1989.  CIS is the largest dropout prevention program in the state.  Local CIS programs are 501 (c)(3) non-profit organizations established to support schools by working with at-risk students in order to decrease the dropout rate.
    Every year, thousands of students who would have otherwise dropped out, stay in school because of the efforts of CIS.
    What does CIS do?
    CIS helps at-risk students improve in academics, attendance and/or behavior, encouraging more students to stay in school, graduate and prepare for post-secondary life.
    CIS provides services and resources through community partnerships to ensure a comprehensive case-managed approach to meet the needs of studetns.
    Why have CIS?
    Each year students continue to drop out at increasing rates.  More than two million Texas students are at risk of dropping out.  This risk is especially prevalent in the Hispanic and African-American populations.  These two populations account for over 75% of all students who drop out.  The result of students dropping out of school is a reduction in talent and an overwhelming economic burden to the state, costing millions of dollars in lost income and tax revenues, higher welfare, unemployment and criminal justice costs.
    Ultimately, dropouts contribute to an il lprepared and uneducated work force.
    To ensure that students stay in school and prepare for post-secondary education and the workforce, it is necessary to have a student-centered, comprehensive approach to address the many challenges studetns encounter.

    Dropouts:
    • are 3.5 times more likely to become incarcerated.
    • account for 75% of all inmates in the state prison systems.
    • lose approximately $366,000 in lifetime earning potential.
    • typically earn only 2/3 the income of high school graduates.

    CIS Model
         CIS helps students address many issues or challenges that can prevent them from graduating and pursuing post-secondary goals.  CIS takes a holistic approach to help students succeed by addressing their physical, emotional, and academic needs though a wide range of services.  CIS provides access to these services for thousands of youth and their families each year.  Additionally, each campus served by CIS has a case manager to ensure services are fully and effectively delivered.  CIS gives students the opportunity for success by providing specific servicers such as:
    • Tutoring
    • Mentoring
    • Supportive Guidance
    • College readiness
    • Career preparation
    • Support services for studetns and parents
    • Health and Human services support
    • During school activities and enrichment
    CIS Basics
         To be successful, CIS believes that every child needs and deserves a:
    • one-on-one relationship with a caring adult
    • safe place to learn and grow
    • healthy state and a healthy future
    • marketable skill to use upon graduation and
    • chance to give back to the community
         These CIS Five Basics are provided to students on every campus served by CIS.
     
     CIS Works
         Since 1979, CIS has successfully served at-risk students by improving student performance and reducing the dropout rate.
         Through data collection, CIS evaluates program effectiveness at the state and local levels reporting on the following key elements of student success in:
    • academics, attendance, and behavior improvement;
    • staying in school; and
    • graduation rates.
    This data is provided in an annual report at the local and state level.
         CIS continues to increase the number of students it serves,surpass key performance goals, and leverage increased resources and funding.  CIS has received legislative funding since 1989.
     
    CIS Partners
         Community Partners are a viable solution to help combat the dropout problem.  CIS effectively coordinates and collaborates with community partners to address students' needs by bringing the resources, volunteers and service providers into the school setting where they work as a collaborative team to help students succeed.
    Evey year thousands of individuals contribute in a variety of ways to the CIS mission.
    Ensuring an educated and prepared workforce is a community responsibility.
