  • Why Choose a 2-Year College?

One reason a graduate may choose a 2-year college over a 4-year university is cost.  The College Board reports that the average annual cost of tuition and fees for a public 2-year college is $3,440 for in-district students. However, according to the same source, the average annual cost for a public 4-year university is $9,410 for in-state students and $23,890 for out-of-state students. For a private 4-year university, you can expect to the cost to be $32,410 per year in tuition and fees.

Community colleges offer a variety of associate degrees and even some bachelor degrees.  Typically, community colleges have programs and training that can be completed in two years or less.  On the other hand, universities generally offer programs that result in bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees and take longer to complete (4+ years). Both community colleges and universities offer a variety of programs of study.

Some graduates choose to attend a local community college due to living arrangements. A college student that stays at the family household while attending college can save money on dorm expenses. Community colleges often have different admission policies and criteria.  It can often be said that admission criteria for universities are more stringent, especially to gain entry into prestigious schools of study.  Due to the smaller enrollment, class sizes are often smaller in community colleges.  Having a smaller learning environment may have an impact on your decision.

Finally, many students enrolled at 4-year universities take classes at 2-year colleges in order to transfer for their degree program.  This can be one way to save money on tuition, room and board during the summer session.

Tuition costs, programs, and learning environment may be reasons a 2-year college may be an option for you.

2-Year College, Junior College, and Community College are all terms describing colleges generally associated with 2-year degree programs.
