MISD Commitment To Close the Achievement Gap
    For English Language Learners

Immigrant new arrival LEP or newcomer students are recent immigrants who have little or no English proficiency and who may have had limited formal education in their native countries. These students have needs that traditional English as a second language (ESL) and bilingual programs are usually not designed to address.

The latest research on the academic achievement of new arrival immigrant LEP students reflects the effectiveness of newcomer programs. Midland ISD Newcomer program is design to bridge the gap between newcomers’ needs and traditional language support programs as well as support reduction of the academic performance gap that exists between recent arrivals LEP students and native English language speakers
