Midland ISD Health & Physical Education Vision

Through high-quality, standards-based instruction in safe and inclusive environments that promote physical literacy, student engagement, and lifelong wellness, students will gain physical and social skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.

Midland ISD Health & Physical Education Beliefs

We believe that a well-designed physical education program

  • Must provide students with a safe and supportive environment where students develop physical and social skills through purposeful movements. Purposeful movement ensures that physical activity is intentional and aligned with learning goals. When students feel physically and emotionally secure, they are more willing to participate, take appropriate risks, and engage fully in movement activities. A safe environment, supported by clear expectations, consistent procedures, and positive teacher–student relationships, allows students to focus on learning, build confidence, and develop both physical and social skills. This foundation of safety and support creates the conditions for student success and well-being.
  • Must ensure students engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for the majority of the class time. Regular MVPA supports physical health by improving cardiovascular fitness, strength, and endurance, while also enhancing focus, attention, and readiness to learn. Through active participation, students build confidence in their movement skills, develop positive social behaviors, and learn to appreciate the value of physical activity. These experiences help establish healthy habits and attitudes that support lifelong participation in physical activity and overall wellness.
  • Must develop a variety of motor skills and movement patterns. Exposure to diverse movements such as running, jumping, throwing, balancing, and coordinating actions helps students become physically literate and prepared to participate in a wide range of physical activities. When students develop a broad skill set, they are more likely to feel successful, enjoy movement, and remain active throughout their lives, supporting long-term health and wellness.
  • Must grow students both physically and mentally because movement and learning are deeply connected. Physical activity supports physical development while also strengthening brain function, focus, and emotional regulation. When students engage in purposeful movement, they improve coordination, confidence, and fitness while simultaneously developing problem-solving skills, resilience, and self-discipline. Addressing both physical and mental growth ensures students are better prepared to learn, manage challenges, and succeed in school and beyond.
