Rising 7th grade students may select neuroscience as an elective for 7th grade during the spring registration process.  Parents may contact Advanced Academic Services for more information by emailing gifted@midlandisd.net or calling 432-240-1356.

Students are encouraged to complete the middle school program in 7th and 8th grade. Beginning in 9th grade, students can choose various pathways within STEM+M, including applying for technical health science programs or continuing into the Biomedical Science Program. 

A specialist staffed by Baylor will coordinate authentic field-based experiences for students throughout the school year.  Most of these experiences will be during the school day, but opportunities for engaging with medical staff and programming will also be available outside the school day through the Health Occupations Student Association. 

High school students that complete the Biomedical Science Program have the opportunity to earn between 16 and 34 college credit hours through dual credit in health science programming.  Take a look at the Biomedical Science Program for more details.

STEM+M coursework is aligned to be completed within the school day and allows for involvement in either fine arts or athletics.  Students are strongly encouraged to complete foreign language and Algebra 1 requirements before the 9th grade. 

2026-2027:  Yes, students may enter 8th grade Principals of Bioscience without the prerequisite Neuroscience if space is available. 

2027-2028 and thereafter: No.  7th grade Neuroscience is a prerequisite for 8th grade Principals of Bioscience.  Students may still apply for high demand sets in health science programs beginning in the 9th grade.  Check out the high school health science programs listed below.

Students will be well-prepared for advanced high school courses in health science, dual credit opportunities, and careers in neuroscience, biosciences, or health fields. The program aligns with industry demands, ensuring relevance and employability.  Students completing the 4-year Biomedical Sciences Degree plan will be well prepared for college programming leading to degrees in the medical industry. Additionally, students will have access to unique experiences locally through both Midland College and Midland Health, as well as other local health industry partners.  

Principles of Biosciences will count as a high school elective.  This course does not factor into Grade Point Averaging (GPA) for high school.

Neuroscience will be offered at Abell, Alamo, Goddard, and San Jacinto schools. 

STEM+M students in middle school should also take Pre-AP Algebra in 8th grade.  STEM+M students in high school must complete dual credit Anatomy and Physiology and Scientific Research and Design while taking advanced courses (AP or DC) in math and science.
