What is MAP Growth?

NWEA MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) is an adaptive test that allows teachers to identify student's specific learning needs and opportunities for growth.  Students take the assessment three times a year in the following subjects:

  • Reading and Math:  Grades K-8
  • Science:  Grades 5,6,7,8
  • Algebra I
  • Biology
  • English I
  • English II
  • Geometry
  • Algebra II

MAP Growth is a computer-adaptive test. If your child answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. This type of assessment challenges top performers without overwhelming students whose skills are below grade level.

How often will my child take MAP Growth tests?

Midland ISD will administer the MAP Growth test to students in grades K-12 at the beginning of the school year, in the middle of the school year, and at the end of the school year.

What subject tests will my child take?

Students will be tested in specific subject areas based on grade level in grades K-8, and in high school, based on the student's schedule of courses.

MAP RIT Scores?

After each MAP test, students receive a score called a RIT score.  Think of a score as a student's height.  The score reflects the students knowledge, skills, and abilitiels like inches reflect height. The RIT (Rasch Unit) scale is an equal-interval scale, like feet/inches.  Equal-interval means that a change of 10 RIT points indicates the same thing regardless of whether a student is at the top, bottom, or middle of a scale.  A RIT score has the same meaning regardless of the grade level or age of the student.  Scores over time can be compared to tell how much growth the student has made, similar to how measuring height can show how much a person has grown.  RIT scores helps teachers determine what each student is ready to learn.

How do schools and teachers use MAP Growth Scores?

Teachers can use RIT scores to guide instruction, personalize learning, and monitor the growth of individual students.  Principals and administrators can use the scores to see the performance and progress of a grade level, a school, or the district.
