What's Happening
Fentanyl is a man-made narcotic that can be safe when taken as prescribed by a doctor. Illegally manufactured fentanyl is often added to other drugs and fake pills. These fake pills can look like pills that come from a pharmacy. Fentanyl pills can even look like candy. Most of the time, a student has no idea they are taking Fentanyl. Fentanyl comes in many forms; even the smallest amount can be deadly.
Please review this information about fentanyl and talk with your student. Tell them about the danger and help them understand that even one pill can kill. Remind them not to take any pills or medicine that did not come from their doctor or pharmacist. Check your student's social media and watch for signs of drug use.
While we haven’t had any cases on our campuses, we are prepared to help keep students healthy and safe. Narcan (Naloxone) is a life-saving emergency medicine that can reverse opioid overdose or poisoning. Narcan is safe and easy to use. It does not cause harm, even if given to someone who hasn't taken opioids. Every MISD campus has two doses of Narcan in the nurse's office, and MISD police officers carry Narcan. MISD nurses and police officers are trained to administer Narcan, and all MISD employees are encouraged to learn how.
