2026-2027 THEME: BIOGLOW

Target Age Group

  • Elementary Teams- Grades 4-6 with emphasis on 5th and 6th grades

  • Junior High Teams- Grades 7-8

Team Size

  • Teams generally consist of 5-6 students but could go up to 8.

Robot Design and Build

  • FIRST LEGO League and GEAR Robotics uses the LEGO kits to build and program robots, with varying levels of complexity based on the specific league.  

Programming

FIRST LEGO League use a visual programming language (LabView) that simplifies coding concepts for younger students.  LabView can be operated using Chromebooks or desktops/laptops. 

Research Component

  • These programs include a research component where students identify real-world problems and propose innovative solutions related to a specific theme.

Season Duration and Components

  • The FIRST LEGO League season lasts from October to January.  Generally, two exhibition meets and one competition meet will be held in Midland.  Teams may qualify to advance to regional competition in Lubbock at the competition meet.

  • The GEAR League season lasts from February to April and complements the FIRST LEGO season.
