-
Q: My child was invited to attend Intersession. Does my child have to attend?
A: The district will make efforts to communicate with parents/guardians regarding attendance for accelerated instruction as we would with any other instructional programs that are subject to
compulsory attendance. Students are strongly encouraged to attend intersession. In the event the student is not able to attend, parents are encouraged to contact the campus principal to determine how to best support the needs of each student. While Intersession is not required for consideration of promotion, accelerated instruction provided during Intersession will support students in the mastery of the skills necessary for success at the next grade level. Depending on the student, successful completion of summer intersession may be required for promotion. -
Q: My child was not invited to attend Intersession. Can my child attend?
A: In order to maintain an average ratio of 1 teacher to 15 students, Intersession will be by invitation only. Campuses are creating waitlists for parents requesting Intersession in the event space may be available.
-
Q: What is HB 4545 and how does it impact whether or not my child is invited to attend Intersession?
A: HB 4545 is the 19 Texas Administrative Code (TAC) §101.2005(c) indicating that students who were absent or otherwise do not have 2021 STAAR valid assessments did not perform satisfactorily and, as a result, are required to receive accelerated instruction. Intersession programming supports accelerated instruction, but Intersession will be used in conjunction with accelerated instruction provided throughout the year.
-
Q: Will teachers teaching Intersession be certified or highly qualified teachers?
A: MISD encourages educators to obtain the appropriate SBEC-issued teaching certificate for placement into teaching assignments; or if needed, can also utilize the “Other” waiver applications approved by the Board.
-
Q: How does Intersession impact my student for promotion to the next grade at the end of the school year?
A: Promotion and course credit to the next grade level is based on mastery of the curriculum. In addition to the factors in law that must be considered for promotion, mastery shall be determined
as follows:- Course assignments and unit evaluations shall be used to determine student grades in a subject. An average of 70 or higher shall be considered a passing grade.
- Mastery of the skills necessary for success at the next level shall be validated by assessments that may either be incorporated into unit or final exams or may be administered separately. Mastery of at least 70 percent of the objectives is required.
While Intersession is not required for consideration of promotion, accelerated instruction provided during Intersession will support students in the mastery of the skills necessary for success at the next grade level.
-
