CITIZENS' RENAMING COMMITTEE

  • Welcome to the homepage for the Citizens' Renaming Committee. Thank you for your interest in this important process.
The process of rebranding Lee High School to Legacy High School is now underway. Please check the timeline page for information and updates.

On October 14, 2021 the Midland ISD School Board released the following statement:

Tonight, the School Board voted to change the name of Robert E. Lee High School and Freshman High School to Legacy High School and Legacy Freshman High School. The mascot will remain the Rebels, though we will drop any Confederate imagery and rebrand the "Rebels" from the American Revolutionary War period. As to how it will be depicted, the Board asked that the Citizens' Committee re-convene, solicit depictions from the community, and submit their top two selections to students at LHS for a vote. The Board also approved keeping the colors of maroon and white.

While the schools will be named Legacy, the process of rebranding at the campuses will be gradual. Small steps will be taken as soon as is practicably possible, but larger capital projects may take time as we plan for the financial and logistical impact of changes.

The Citizens' Renaming Committee was formed by the Board of Trustees with the purpose of recommending a new name for Robert E. Lee High School and Robert E. Lee Freshman High School. The Committee is made up of MISD administration, staff, students, and community members.
