    Midland ISD Online Academy FAQs 

      • Why are we using Apply Midland for families to access Midland ISD Online Academy Options? 
        • Apply Midland is a tool for families to select schools of choice. Midland ISD Online Academy is a choice option for families and will allow them to have access to their campus’ 100% online option. 
        • Families that are not interested in an online option do not need to submit an application via Apply Midland.
      • When will the application for Midland ISD Online applications be available? 
        • The Midland ISD Online Academy will open on August 3rd.
      • How long will the Midland ISD Online Academy application window be open?
        • The Midland ISD Online Academy application will close on August 14th at 5:00 pm. 
      • Why is this timeline so short? 
        • Schools will need to build out schedules for students for both the virtual option and the in-person option and identify teachers that will teach in-person or provide instruction online. Additionally, this will provide schools enough time to slot students and teachers into the correct sections for the first day of school.
      • Which schools will be included on the application on August 3rd? 
        • Apply for Midland ISD Online Academy at their home campus
        • Applications for Transfer (in-person) to another MISD campus for Fall 2020
        • Applications to Schools of Choice with available seats
        • Applications to Magnet Schools with available seats
        • Starting on August 3rd families will be able to use Apply Midland to:
      • Who should fill out an application?
        • The parent/guardian of the student should complete and submit the application along with their student in case there are additional questions for the student to answer. 
      • What happens after I submit my application to the Midland ISD Online Academy at my home campus?
        • Student Services will process your application to verify that you have applied to the correct campus. 
        • Campuses will reach out to parents directly to provide them guidance on their next steps.
      • What if I am new to the district and have not registered for a campus?
        • Families are advised to complete their registration in Skyward at their neighborhood school before using the Apply Midland to select a virtual option.  
      • If I choose the Midland ISD Online Academy versus on-campus learning, and I decide that I don’t like the virtual platform, can my child change to on-campus instruction?
        • Students are eligible to transition between virtual and on-campus learning at the end of each grading period
        • A Google form will be available that parents must complete prior to the end of the grading period to change their learning option selection.
      • My child receives special education services. Who can I call with questions?
        • Please call the MISD Special Services Department at 432-240-1401 for any questions regarding special education services.
      • My child receives English Language Learner services. Who can I call with questions?
        • Please call the MISD English Learners Department: Bilingual and ESL Services at 432-240-1481 for any questions regarding ELL services.
      • How do I get help with the application?

    Application

      • When will the application be available?
      • Do I need to use this application process to access Midland Online Academy?
        • No. To access a seat at a Midland Online Academy or to change from in-person to online instruction please reach out directly to your campus. 
      • Do I have to reapply if my student currently attends a School of Choice?
        • You do not need to REAPPLY, but you will need to log into the Apply Midland system to complete the Intent to Return form.  Students who do not complete the ITR process will forfeit their seat and have to submit a new application.
      • Do I have to reapply for my transfer?
        • You do not need to REAPPLY, but you will need to log into the Apply Midland system to complete the Intent to Return form.  Students who do not complete the ITR process will forfeit their seat and have to submit a new application.
      • Can I apply to Carver Center through Apply Midland?  
        • Yes, you will be able to submit an application for the Gifted and Talented program (Grades 2-12) through the Apply Midland system beginning Tuesday, December 8th.The requirements for Carver Center have not changed and students must be tested and identified as Gifted and Talented in order to be accepted to attend this campus.  Carver Center does not admit students through a lottery process.  Once your application has been processed the Advanced Academics department will share more information about the testing process. Kindergarten Referral Period
      • Do I have to use Apply Midland to attend my neighborhood school?
        • No, only students who are applying to a School of Choice or for a Transfer to a campus OTHER than their neighborhood school need to submit an application through the Apply Midland system. 
      • Can I submit an application to make a change in January 2021?
        • No, the Apply Midland system is accepting applications for the 2021-2022 school year.
      • Can I apply for a Pre-K seat?
        • The Apply Midland system is currently accepting applications for Pre-K at the IDEA Travis campus.  All other MISD campuses will begin accepting Pre-K applications on April 1, 2021 through the Apply Midland system.  Please contact the Early Childhood office at 432-240-1530 for more information.  
      • Which schools are included on the application?
        • Families will be able to submit the following types of applications on Apply Midland:
          • Bowie Fine Arts Academy
          • Washington STEM Academy
          • Pease Communications & Technology
          • Ben MIlam International Academy
          • Sam Houston Collegiate Preparatory Elementary
          • 6th Grade AVID at San Jacinto
          • Young Women’s Leadership Academy 
          • Early College High School (New)
          • IDEA Travis (New)
          • Gifted and Talented Program (1st-11th grade)
            • Notice of Intent to Return for students attending a School of Choice or are on a Transfer (replacing the prior google form process) 
            • Applications to Schools of Choice
            • Applications for Transfer to another MISD campus for Fall 2021
      • Are there any extra steps for certain schools? Do I need to do anything besides submit the application?
            • Yes, certain schools require additional documents or information.  The unique application requirements for each campus will be available through Apply Midland.  Examples of additional requirements include:
              • Submission of Standardized Test Scores
              • Submission of Transcript Information 
              • Submission of Current Set of Activities a Student is Involved In
      • Will all schools have the same timeline? 
            • Yes, all the schools will have the same timeline to ensure that families receive information about enrollment options at the same time.  This will allow families to make informed decisions about enrollment for Fall 2021
            • Applications for choice schools and transfer requests for Fall 2021 will be open December 8, 2020 and will close on January 29th, 2021 at 5:00 pm. 
            • After the initial application round  closes, a second application round will open during the week of February 22, 2021.  At this time, families that missed the first application round can apply to schools of choice and Fall 2021 transfers that have availability
      • Who should fill out an application?
            • The parent/guardian of the student should complete and submit the application along with their student, in case there are additional questions for the student to answer.
      • How can I learn more about schools and the application process?

            • If I submit my application on the first day it is open during round 1 will I have a better chance of getting a preferred school?
            • No, all student applications during round 1 will be processed at the same time. Applications received on the first day of the application window and applications submitted at the end of the application window will be processed at the same time. 
      • If I submit my application on the first day of round 2 will I have a better chance of getting a preferred school?
            • Yes, applications submitted during the second round will be considered on a rolling basis so they will be processed as they are received. 
      • Will the district provide transportation?
            • Each school has different requirements regarding transportation services.  Please review the information on the School Finder (www.midlandisd.net/apply) for details about whether a school provides transportation services to students 
      • My family moved since completing our application and accepting an offer. The school we selected is now too far away. What should we do?
            • After February 22, 2020, families will be able to see all schools with available seats. You will need to submit a formal transfer request with Apply Midland to gain access to a new seat.
      • What if I change my mind about applying?
        • If you would like to make any changes to your student’s application, please visit www.midlandisd.net/apply and click on the “Apply”  button.  From there, you will login to the Apply Midland system using your Apply Midland username and password.  Click on “Edit Application” and submit your changes.  Any desired changes must be made by 5pm on January 29, 2021.  
      • My child receives special education services. Who can I call with questions?
        • Please call the MISD Special Services Department at 432-240-1401 for any questions regarding special education services 
      • My child receives English Language Learner Services. Who can I call with questions?
            • Please call the MISD English Learners Department: Bilingual and ESL Services at 432-240-1481 for any questions regarding ELL services 
      • What factors impact my child’s priority to a school we selected?
      •  A range of factors are taken into consideration regarding a student’s priority for a selected school. These factors include: 
              • Sibling Preference: Priority given to students who are applying to a school that a sibling attends or was recently accepted to
              • Zone Preference: Preference given to students who are applying from a particular geographical zone in order to ensure that a school equally represents all district geographic zones
              • Staff Preference: Preference given to students who are applying to a school where a parent/guardian is an employee 
            • In addition to these preferences, individual schools may also have additional priorities that they consider.  These policies are fully outlined in the Apply Midland Policy Document found here
      • How many schools can I select on the application?
            • Families can select 5 schools on the application 
      • How does the choice process work?
            • The process aims to ensure that students receive an offer to preferred schools while taking into account the admissions criteria for each campus 
            • Families apply to school options their student is interested in. Each school follows a priority structure to determine which applicants should be considered in what order. The system then runs a random lottery for each school. Students then receive multiple offers or are placed on waitlists for each school they selected.       • I have 5 days to make a choice about my Apply Midland options but I have not heard back about if my student can get into a Gifted and talented program. What should I do?
            • Accept an Apply Midland offer then decline later if you choose to send your student to an alternate program.  
      • What should I do if I missed the application window and I am interested in one of these school options?

      • Transfers

      • What is the process for applying for a transfer for Fall 2021?
            • The application window for transfers opens on December 8, 2020 at 10:00am and closes on January 29, 2021 at 5 pm.
      • When do transfers happen? 
            • This application window is for families seeking transfers for 2021-2022 school year.  Students who receive transfer offers in March 2021 and confirm enrollment in the transfer school will start at that school in August 2021 for the 2021-2022 school year.
      • When will I receive notice about my transfer request?
            • All students will receive information about their transfer request on or around March 1, 2021.
      • What are the requirements for a transfer?
            • Transfer applications are reviewed on a case by case basis and a determination is made based on the number of the situation and number of seats available. 
            • Transfer applications are based on the following cases: 
              • Student is a child of a district employee
              • Continuation currently on the campus and may want to stay
              • Transfer from a PEG Campus
              • Transfer for placement at a campus with a sibling requiring special education services
              • Transfer for safety reasons
              • Transfer for transportation reasons
              • Transfer for placement at a campus that a sibling attends 
              • Out of District Transfer
      • How do I apply for a transfer for the current school year?
        • Families need to contact Student Services at applymidlandisd.net with help in completing a transfer for the here and now.  

    Waitlist

    •  What is a waitlist?
      • A waitlist is a process campuses use when there are more applications to the campus than seats available
      • When a campus reaches capacity, the online application system adds applicants to a “waitlist” and notifies the family a seat becomes available at the campus
    •  How do waitlists work?
      • Students are admitted to the school from the waitlist when there is space at a campus 
    • If my student is on a school’s waitlist when will I hear if he or she will be offered a seat?
      • The Apply Midland team will send you an email notifying you if you receive a seat via the waitlist.
      • It’s important to remember that even if a student is on the waitlist they may not receive an offer for a seat
    •  Do waitlist expire?
      • Yes, the waitlist for magnet schools and schools of choice expire on the last Friday in October. If you are interested in attending a school you were waitlisted, at you will need to submit an application for the following school year.
