• Welcome to MHS AFJROTC:

Thank you for joining Air Force Junior ROTC (AFJROTC).

The AFJROTC offers students the opportunity to experience a variety of activities outside the normal high school curriculum. Students are challenged to become better citizens by learning discipline, respect, leadership, and organization which will help them achieve their potential during their high school years.

Let me assure you, we are not recruiters for the military nor do we advocate students join the military. There is no requirement or commitment for any student to enlist in the military following graduation. In fact, over 75% of our graduates never put on a military uniform once they graduate – but all will tell you that what they learned has helped them in their endeavors beyond high school.  Sometimes, a student feels the military is their only way to get ahead in life instead of exploring all the opportunities that are available – we encourage those students to look harder at what they really want to achieve. It is far more likely that we spend time talking students out of joining the military than encouraging them to join.

For someone who is determined to join the Armed Forces, AFJROTC provides the extra boost and training that makes the initial basic training in the military far easier. Whether a person joins the Army, Navy, Air Force or Marines, much of the initial training is identical and JROTC cadets normally excel during the basic training. We have AFJROTC graduates who have become Marines return to tell us how much our program helped them. Additionally, with an AFJROTC certificate in hand, a person enlisting is brought in at a higher pay grade resulting in a $200-$300 per month advantage over someone who is not a graduate of the program.

But what does AFJROTC provide during high school? Our program provides a physical education credit as well as a general credit toward graduation at Midland High School. It is a regular class that teaches management, character, communication, life skills, and career opportunities. Additionally we conduct have classes in aviation history, astronomy and space explorations, global and cultural studies, science of flight (how to fly an airplane), and national defense policy.  We take field trips and provide a variety of extracurricular activities for our cadets such as drill teams, marksmanship, static and radio controlled modeling, and model rocketry.

Finally, we are not a boot camp – we encourage students to assume responsibility for their actions by holding them to a higher standard that what you normally find in a high school. Our code of conduct is reinforced through the Air Force’s creed of Integrity First, Service before Self, and Excellence in All We Do.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to call the AFJROTC offices at 6890-5101/5102 or come by our offices at 1005 West Illinois (across the street from the Midland High School).

Thank you and again Welcome to AFJROTC.

  • Mandatory Activity Fee: $40.00

We do have an annual activity fee set by MISD for AFJROTC participation.  However, the fee is only $40.00.  We are able to keep the cost so low due to the Parent volunteers for the JROTC Booster Club.  This fee is used to help off-set the costs for Cadet Activities.
