• Patriot Day Remembrance Ceremony - 11 September

The Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance (shortened to Patriot Day) occurs on September 11 of each year, and was designated in memory of the 2,977 innocent men, women, and children killed in the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Initially, the day was called the Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the Terrorist Attacks on September 11, 2001.

On October 25, 2001, the U.S. House of Representatives Joint Resolution 71 was approved by a unanimous vote of 407–0. The resolution requested that the President designate the day of remembrance each year on September 11. President George W. Bush signed the resolution into Public Law 107–89 on December 18, 2001. On September 4, 2002, President Bush proclaimed September 11, 2002 as Patriot Day.

The Midland High School AFJROTC TX-20004, will celebrate Patriot Day this year with a short reveille ceremony beginning at 0800 hours and including the playing of the National Anthem and Taps by the Midland High School Band.  Following reveille, several local dignitaries will speak before dismissal at 0830 hours.

Each year, nearly 40,000 high school students from across the country enter to win a share of the $2.2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the VFW’s Voice of Democracy audio-essay competition.

The VFW established the Voice of Democracy program (VOD) in 1947 to provide students grades 9-12 the opportunity to express themselves in regards to democratic ideas and principles.

The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. Other national scholarships range from $1,000-$16,000, and the first-place winner from each (State) VFW Department wins an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

The VFW Post 7208 would like to recognize the winners and achievements for the entries submitted for the local Midland Area.  The award banquet is free for the participating students and their families and will be conducted on 15 February, starting at 6:00 pm.
