Midland ISD offers summer meals at no cost for all students age 18 & under, at any of these meal sites. Please be aware that this is not a drive-thru pick-up, like was available during COVID. Instead, students can get meals and eat on site. Visit midlandisd.net/summermeals for a list of locations.

The Legacy High School Chorale has been named a national finalist for The American Prize in Choral Performance in the youth and school division. This was the first year that the group had even submitted for the award.

Student-written book headed to National Competition
Two Coleman High students are heading to Washington D.C. this summer to perform their book "Misplaced Pieces." The book was one of only 10 selected during a state-wide competition in Dallas.

Midland ISD Closer to Cleaner Air on Campuses
Midland ISD is upgrading its heating, cooling and air purification systems. The district plans to begin replacing HVAC systems before the start of the next school year, thanks in large part to a federal grant.

Carver Center named top charter elementary in Texas
Midland ISD's Carver Center has been named the No. 1 Charter Elementary School in the state of Texas by the U.S. News and World Report. The ranking is based on reading and math proficiency and performance data.

MISD named District of the Year for work with Bilingual students
“It is truly an honor to be recognized as ‘District of the Year’ by Summit K12,” said Lety Amalla, Executive Director of Student Programs. “This award affirms the commitment we have made to support emergent bilingual students across our district, and the gains our students have made is a testament to the investment our teachers and partners have made to education.”

35 MISD Musicians Earn All-Region Honors
A total of 35 MISD students from Midland and Legacy High Schools have been named to the All-Region Orchestra. Additionally, four were also honored as "First Chair" for their respective instruments.

MHS tennis captain honored by WTTA

MISD to install LED lighting district-wide
The Midland ISD Board of Trustees has given the green light to new, cost-saving LED lighting throughout the district. The project will include retrofitting all existing fluorescent and incandescent lighting both inside and outside.

MISD celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
National Hispanic Heritage month begins September 15, and Midland ISD is celebrating in a variety of ways, including music, dance, food, and cultural enrichment.

MISD launches space-themed science program
Midland ISD is excited to announce the launch of a new program aimed at exposing students to aerospace, aeronautics, and space exploration. Go For Launch! uses space exploration as a platform to engage students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), teamwork, communication, and leadership.

Abell Principal named Middle School Principal of the Year for Region 18
Abell Junior High Principal Cyndi Pyles has been named Middle School Principal of the Year for 2021-22 by the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals for Region 18. Pyles was chosen for this honor by her peers within the region. She is eligible to compete for the state title of Texas Principal of the Year.

Five Athletes to be inducted into MISD Hall of Legends
Midland ISD is excited to announce the Hall of Legends Class of 2021. This years class is one of the strongest ever, featuring five prominent athletes who excelled during their time at Midland ISD and beyond.

MISD Accepted Into Teacher Incentive Allotment Program
Midland ISD has received initial approval to participate in the state's Teacher Incentive Allotment program, which will give teachers the opportunity to earn extra, performance-based pay if they meet certain academic goals.

Rusk 6th Graders Place 1st, 2nd in Stock Market Game
Rusk sixth-graders' prowess in investing earned them first- and second-place finishes playing the Stock Market Game in the El Paso Region's Middle School division. In the process they learned about local companies and that in trading "anything can happen."

MISD Family Support Center Receives $2,000 Grant
The Midland ISD Family Support Center has received a $2,000 grant that will help the center continue supporting students and families in need. The money provided by Superior HealthPlan will fund hygiene kits that contain essential items such as laundry detergent, soap, shampoo, and deodorant.

MHS Senior Wins Tennis State Championship
Midland High's Tyler Stewart took home the gold at the UIL state tennis finals. He's the first MISD athlete to ever win a tennis singles state championship. Tyler will head continue his tennis career at Abilene Christian University this fall.

Board approves 2021-22 Academic Calendar
The new calendar includes two weeks of "intersession," which is a chance for students who are falling behind to receive extra help. The two weeks of intersession are the weeks of October 18 and February 7.

English Learner Students Show Impressive Gains
A total of 185 students passed the English language proficiency assessment this year, meaning they can move out of bilingual instruction, and into English-only instruction with the rest of the student body. Last year, only 49 students met the English proficiency criteria.

Schools Honored by Imagine Learning

Milam accepted into No Excuses University
Milam Elementary has been accepted into No Excuses University! In order to qualify, campuses must meet rigorous criteria, and implement six required systems. Each system is designed to pave the way for all students to attend college. Milam is now one of fewer than 230 schools nationwide to join the network.

Meet Liliana Burleson, literacy liaison
Liliana Burleson has a deep love for literacy, and thanks to a grant from the United Way of Midland, she serves as a literacy liaison at Milam Elementary. Students in Liliana's class get small-group and one-on-one supplemental reading instruction, which is intended to jumpstart their literacy proficiency.

All De Zavala first-graders given free bikes
De Zavala Elementary first-graders rode away with big smiles after Wish For Wheels provided bikes to each one of them, thanks to a generous donation from Anadarko Petroleum Corporation. In all, 100 bikes and helmets were donated to 88 first-graders; the remaining 12 bikes will be given to students in other grades as part of an attendance contest.

Midland ISD named Lone Star Governance Mentor District
The TEA has invited Midland ISD to serve as a mentor district for the Lone Star Governance Exemplar Cohort. The mentor designation signifies that the district has already successfully implemented Lone Star Governance for more than a year, has a wealth of knowledge, and is willing to share with other districts concerning effective implementation of this work.
