The Midland Independent School District operates 26 elementary schools. Included in that count are Bunche Early Childhood Center and West Early Childhood Center. Technology infrastructure is installed at each campus to provide internet access in each classroom. Two campuses, Elisha M. Pease and Booker T. Washington, were designated magnet schools in 2001.
Each elementary school provides TEKS-based instruction in a comprehensive curriculum for kindergarten through grade six. As designated by the Texas Education Agency, the foundation curriculum includes English language arts, mathematics, science; and, social studies consisting of Texas, United States and world history, government, and geography. The enrichment curriculum includes languages other than English, health, physical education, and fine arts. MISD proudly notes that in 2007 all elementary campuses met Adequate Yearly Progress standards established by No Child Left Behind.
Midland Independent School District offers a variety of instructional arrangements and settings including whole group, flexible small group, individual instruction and support services for students with special needs. MISD encourages parents to actively participate in their children's education by joining school groups and communicating frequently with teachers and principals.
In cooperation with the After School Child Care Advisory Council, the YMCA and Campfire offer after school child care on 17 elementary school campuses. YMCA serves Bonham, Bowie, Burnet, DeZavala, Greathouse, Houston, Lamar, Milam, Rusk and Santa Rita. Campfire serves Bush, Emerson, Fannin, Henderson, Jones, Parker, and West. Parents can obtain details about hours of service and fees by contacting the YMCA or Campfire.
