About Dr. Sylvester Perez

Dr. Sylvester Perez recently completed a successful first year as Superintendent of Midland Independent School District. With 34 years of experience in public education and nearly a decade of experience as a superintendent, he is highly respected for his innovative ideas and warm personality. The San Antonio native received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M. He earned his mid-management administrative degree from Texas A&I (now Texas A&M Kingsville) and his doctorate at Texas A&M University in College Station. He served as Superintendent of San Marcos Consolidated ISD from 2002-2006. He also served as the Superintendent of Mathis ISD and Clint ISD between 1997 and 2002. During his tenure in four different school districts he successfully garnered solid backing from the community to pass needed bond issues in each district. Dr. Perez was voted Region 13 Superintendent of the Year, and was one of five finalists for State Superintendent of the Year. He serves as a member of the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Legislative Council and is widely recognized for educational leadership across the state and the nation. Described as a visionary leader, Dr. Perez actively builds partnerships between the surrounding districts, parents, local governments, local universities and colleges, chambers of commerce and the business community. He is committed to providing instructional programs that will prepare Midland’s children for future success. He is married and has three grown sons.
