Tutorials
Tutorials start Tuesday, 9/18/12
There are two types of Tutorials for AVID:
1) AVID Tutorials
2) Mandatory Tutorials
1) AVID Tutorials - These are held during class time every Tuesday and Thursday. It is a PROCESS, not the standard "tutorials" before/after school they get with their core teachers. This is a required component built into every AVID program. Students must complete a TRF (Tutorial Request Form) every Monday and Wedensday night to bring to tutorials on Tuesday and Thursday. They should use their book, Cornell notes, tests and quizzes to help identify topics they are struggling with. Questions should come from their core academic classes (English, Algebra/Geometry, Biology or Geography) that they are failing or not understanding.
We are fortunate to have three excellent experienced tutors: Mrs. Morrison, Mrs. "O" and Mrs. Yates. Tutors are in class every Tuesday and Thursday during regular AVID class time for tutorials. Students turn in their questions before entering class. If they do not have them completed, they must sit outside and write them. If they do not complete them before class starts, they must go to the office for a tardy. Students are divided into three groups and each group has an assigned tutor. Once in their groups, a student presenter writes their question on the board. Peer group members ask questions to help the presenter work through finding their own answer. Tutors are there to make sure groups stay on track and that their peers are asking questions not just giving them the answers.
AVID tutorials are to help students work collaboratively in a group and to promote higher level thinking. These are two skills that will be beneficial to them during their college years.
2) Mandatory Tutorials - Weekly grade reports must be signed by a parent/guardian and returned by Friday of the same week. To ensure parents are keeping track of their student's progress, Parent signatures are required on these. Any student with a grade below 75 in any class is required to attend Mandatory Tutorials in that subject a minimum of once that week. Students must get the Mandatory Tutorial Log signed by the tutoring teacher and the parent/guardian. Mandatory Tutorial tutoring teacher & parent signatures are required on that form. If these are turned in by Friday, students will receive one extra point added to their Binder category average.
Failure to attend mandatory tutorials will result in being placed on probation.
